JackRoosevelt Robinson was born on January 31, 1919, in Cairo, Georgia. His fathername was Jerry Robinson and his mother name was Mallie Robinson. He metnurse-in-training Rachel Isum Robinson when both were attending the Universityof California, Los Angeles. They were married on February 10, 1946. The couplehad three children together named Jack, Sharon and David.

In 1935,Robinson graduated from Washington Junior High School and enrolled at John MuirHigh School. After Muir, Robinson attended Pasadena Junior College (PJC), wherehe continued his athletic career by participating in basketball, football,baseball, and track. In 1938, he was elected to the All-Southland JuniorCollege Team for baseball and selected as the region's Most Valuable Player. Robinsonenrolled at UCLA after graduating from PJC in spring 1939, where he became theschool's first athlete to win varsity letters in four sports: baseball,basketball, football, and track. In 1942, Robinson was drafted and assigned toa segregated Army cavalry unit in Fort Riley, Kansas.

After hisdischarge from army Robinson briefly returned to his old football club, the LosAngeles Bulldogs. In December 1956, Robinson was traded to the New York Giants,but he never played a game for the team. He retired on 5th January1957.In 1962, Robinson was the first African-American to be inducted into theBaseball Hall of Fame. In 1972, the Dodgers retired his jersey number of 42.
