Aesopwas a Greek fabulist and storyteller credited with a number of fables nowcollectively known as Aesop's Fables. He was born in 620 BCE in Thrace. The3rd-century poet Callimachus called him "Aesop of Sardis,” and the laterwriter Maximus of Tyre called him "the sage of Lydia". From Aristotleand Herodotus we learn that Aesop was an ugly slave in Samos and that hismasters were first a man named Xanthus and then a man named Iadmon who by hiscleverness acquires freedom and becomes an adviser to kings and city-states.
